Connecticut Pistol Permit Class
The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course – a prerequisite to apply for your Connecticut State Permit to Carry Pistols or Revolvers – introduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. This is not a concealed carry or self-defense program, rather you’ll learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, pistol shooting fundamentals, various pistol shooting activities and continuing education opportunities available to you.
This course is objective-based, not time based. That said, if you are applying for a Connecticut pistol permit, the state of requires an eight hour program including academic and practical (live fire) components. This program meets State of Connecticut requirements.
We offer semi-private (between two and five students) or private, one-on-one instruction. Group classes (six or more registered students) can also be arranged. Students must complete the NRA online academic program prior to the academic review and practical shooting portion of the course.

This program is an excellent introduction to handguns and handgun safety. If you are interested in purchasing a pistol and have not taken a handgun safety class before, this program is a must. Many students we teach enroll in the class even though they do not have the intention of purchasing a pistol or getting their permit in the near future … they just want to learn about handgun safety and find out what it’s like to fire a handgun in a safe, controlled environment.
If you are interested in applying for your Connecticut permit, this class is a prerequisite. When you have a Connecticut permit, it also streamlines your ability to purchase ammunition, shotguns and rifles.
Children 13 years of age or older are welcome to take the class with a parent.
The program includes is taught in two phases.
Phase I – Home Study – The first part of the program is completing the required NRA Basic Pistol course online. During this phase, you’ll complete knowledge reviews, quizzes and the final exam. The home study program provides us with plenty of time to spend on practical applications, hands-on training, answering your questions, and reviewing the Connecticut permit process.
Phase II Academic Review & Practical Training – After completing the online course, you’ll spend time with your instructor to ensure you understand and meet the academic course objectives. During this time, you’ll be working with your instructor in a classroom atmosphere where a variety of training aids will be used.
Hands-on training rounds-out our program. Of course, there is a live-fire component which will provide you with the opportunity to shoot a variety of quality handguns, but you’ll also spend time in a safe environment with handguns and no ammunition present. Although we always treat handguns as if they are loaded, you’ll learn almost every shooter – including competition professionals and law enforcement – spend a significant amount of time practicing pistol fundamentals and gun-handling skills without ammunition. Whenever possible, we will complete the live-fire component of the class outside.
